Frankfurt, Germany, 8 November 2023:  For its G90 flagship, Genesis has redefined its trademark Athletic Elegance design identity to create a unique and compelling take on the traditional luxury saloon. Blending new technologies with traditional craftsmanship, G90 embodies the brand’s distinctly Korean approach to innovative design.

One of its most remarkable design features is its distinctive Clamshell Bonnet, which is typical of the bold approach that has seen the Genesis G90 win an array of coveted design awards, including Red Dot for Product Design and iF Design, both awarded in 2023, as well as GOOD DESIGN® in 2019.

The single biggest panel currently in global mass vehicle production, the 2.6m2 aluminium clamshell seamlessly integrates the bonnet and front wings and eliminates panel gaps to create a cohesive, sleek and streamlined aesthetic.

“All Genesis models are based on the Genesis design philosophy, ‘Athletic Elegance’. However, the ratio of the two elements of ‘athletic’ and ‘elegance’ is slightly different depending on the model,” commented Jin Kim, Senior Researcher at the Genesis Design Team. “With G90, I wanted to emphasise the youthful sense and delicate design elements in the styling of the vehicle. The clamshell bonnet perfectly encapsulates this; a timeless automotive design feature applied with a new, bold approach to create something unique yet elegant.”

Incorporating a panel of this size, which by comparison is larger than a standard door frame and the equivalent of 45 pieces of A4 paper (or 450 post-it notes), was made possible by Genesis’ industry-leading expertise in body panel pressing and roller hemming, as well as significant investment in high-level hood moulding and forming technology.

Careful engineering and manufacturing allowed Genesis to perfect the production of this unique body panel, although it was not without its challenges. In the development process, engineers discovered that the hood dimensions could alter after the oven painting process. The high temperatures required to colour the bonnet correctly could cause thermal deformation, leaving a gap at the hood-door parting on each side. To counteract this, the hinges were reinforced using re-shape beads, deposits of metal which self-correct to ensure dimensional tolerance during production. An outer ‘C’ shaped hood rail was applied and connected with mastic sealant beads to improve structural rigidity, resulting in a significantly reduced gap, creating the desired flush finish.

Luc Donckerwolke, Chief Creative Officer of Genesis Brand, said: “In a world of uninspired sedans, the design of the G90 resets the standards. Genesis Design has created the most attractive attire by giving it the proportions of an elegant and athletic Gran Turismo. It is complemented by technological differentiators like the aluminium clamshell bonnet and the thinnest quad lamps sporting Micro Lens Array* technology.”

Genesis G90 is currently available to order on request in Germany and Switzerland

Notes to Editor:

* Micro Lens Array (MLA) technology, when applied to headlamps, is an arrangement of tiny micro-optic lenslets that help to deliver increased brightness and accuracy.
